249. Drumcree: Why We Said No | Breandán Mac Cionnaith
11 October 2026
About This Episode
On Sunday, 11 October 2026, Fender Jackson visited Garvaghy Road in Portadown following the end of the recent Drumcree standoff.
The road was completely quiet. Then, by chance, he met Breandán Mac Cionnaith of the Garvaghy Road Residents’ Coalition and recorded this spontaneous walking conversation.
Mac Cionnaith explains why residents opposed the proposed Orange Order parade, discusses the human cost associated with the Drumcree dispute and describes alleged attempts on his life during the 1990s. He also addresses his conviction and imprisonment, the future of the Parades Commission and unionist concerns that the dispute offers a glimpse of how Protestants might be treated within a united Ireland.
Fender challenges him on what would be wrong with 35 people walking silently down the road, whether an early-morning parade without music could provide a compromise and his claim that the Orange Order bears responsibility for loyalist violence associated with Drumcree.
The conversation ends with Mac Cionnaith recalling his friendship with a member of the Orange Order, whose wake he attended, and reflecting on how people with profound political differences can still meet at a human level.
Recorded on Garvaghy Road, Portadown, County Armagh.
